Milford Hall CC new champions of the Voneus Village Cup
In a topsy-turvy match, Milford Hall defended 139, with Aaron Afford (4 for 19) collecting player of the match honours
It all began back in November 2022 when the call for entries for the Voneus Village Cup 2023 got underway. After 10 rounds, 364 matches and over 1,500 fans and club supporters descending on Lord’s on 3rd September, Milford Hall CC were victorious over Leeds and Broomfield CC. For both teams this was a maiden voyage to the hallowed ground at Lord’s and both teams put in a stellar performance that ended with an intense finish. This is the first time in the history of the Village Cup that a team from the West Midlands has walked away with the trophy, with Arron Afford (Milford Hall CC) walking away with player of the match.
This year has been extra special for us as sponsors following the first year of pandemic restrictions followed by the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II. It has been the first time we’ve been able to welcome everyone back to celebrate at Lord’s and what a day it was!
It’s been a privilege to work alongside our ambassador Lydia Greenway who has been extremely supportive during the tournament and been championing the spirit of the competition every step of way.
Special mention to Lanercost Cricket Club for hosting our first ever Junior Masterclass with Lydia Greenway which was a fantastic occasion to recognise the part the club plays in bringing the community together. It was an incredible day with 39 junior members from Lanercost along with their friends and family came to the ground to get involved. It was a privilege to see Mike Mitchelson, Chairman of Lanercost Cricket ring the bell to open the play.
Thank you to all the clubs who entered this year’s Voneus Village Cup Community Club Legends competition, it was truly inspiring to hear such heart-warming stores from across the UK in relation to how many clubs continue to go above and beyond providing support not only to the players and their juniors but to their community. This is how grassroots sports thrives and will continue to thrive with volunteers like Jayne Everett from Ashmanhaugh and Barton Wanderers CC who said ‘We are committed to ensuring there’s a team for everyone – from the 5-year-old to the 63-year-old. The future is exciting, and very, very bright.’ It was a pleasure to present the Voneus Village Cup Community Club Legends plaque to Jayne and Bernie at Lord’s. We can’t wait to hear about the club’s end of season do and afternoon tea.
A huge thanks to all of the clubs who took part in this year’s tournament you’ve made it the best one yet for Voneus and we hope everyone will come back for the Voneus Village Cup 2024.
